40 years Print Commission Members Open Call
If you are Soulisquoy member and interested in putting work forward for selection please email info@soulisquoy.co.uk for full details.
Background
With support from SCVO Adapt & Thrive Fund, Soulisquoy Printmakers is able to commission a series of five print editions of approximately 30-50 prints per edition. The purpose of the commissions is to provide new and alternative means to raise core funds for the organisation, as well as encourage and support artists and printmakers.
The completed editions will be launched and exhibited as part of the 40 Years exhibition at the Pier Arts Centre in early Spring next year.
The suite of five prints will consist of prints commissioned from:
2 locally based artists – by invitation (one emerging, one established)
2 Soulisquoy members – through an open call
1 young artist/printmaker up to 24 years old – through an open call
Stage 1 – Expression of interest – deadline EXTENDED to Monday 24 October 2022
Stage 2 – Print Selection – deadline Monday 7 November 2022
What size should my print be?
We have no print size in mind other than it should be able to fit on a sheet no bigger than A3. The aim will be to have a consistent paper size, but the images themselves can vary.
Is there a theme?
No – your submission should reflect your own interests and practice
Can my print be in any printmaking process?
Yes – as long as we have the process available at the Studio
What if I am just a beginner and never printed an edition before?
We want to encourage as many members as possible to feel that they can be considered for the project – therefore we will provide additional technical support for those who require it at whatever level.
What if I am an experienced printmaker and want to edition this myself?
This is fine too, but know that assistance is available if needed.
Does my print need to have more than one colour or layers?
No – a simple single colour print can be as effective as one with multiple layers –
selection will not be based on complexity or otherwise.
Who is on the selection panel?
In order not to exclude any members from submitting an expression of interest (EoI), the final panel will not be decided upon until we know who is keen to submit work. The project is being co-ordinated by Carol (who will not be submitting an EoI). We currently have a working group of Laura, Carol and Andrew (member and Curator at the Pier Arts Centre) who will be progressing the three other print commissions.
What happens if I am selected?
You will be issued with a simple agreement that covers all the arrangements as described above and below in more detail.
You will have until end of January 2023 to complete your edition
Depending on your level of experience, you will have technical support and advise available to print your edition. This could simply be a clean pair of hands or more technical support in preparing your printing block/screen, paper preparation and registration.
What happens if I am NOT selected?
We’ll let you know and hope that you will not feel too discouraged. As part of the process, you will have developed some ideas that you can now progress to print a smaller edition of your own, that you can then exhibit and sell at the 40 Years exhibition in Spring next year at the Pier Arts Centre.
We hope to be able to provide some technical sessions throughout the winter months to help and encourage a good range of prints for the exhibition.
