Print and Appliqué Workshop
September - October 2023
The Print and Appliqué Project was a series of heat press printing workshops aimed at 13-18 year olds. The project was designed and led by Young Associates Niamh Haselden, Arwen Haselden and Jamilla Garrett, and explored the use of heat press printing in transferring disperse dyes to textiles. The resulting fabric was developed into a series of wall hangings.
Project Participants Amy Scott, Poppy Yule and Serena Robinson-Hamilton took part in workshops from September to November. Starting with a set of sample fabrics, the group experimented with different methods of producing texture and form within their work. The resulting wall hangings were inspired by stained glass windows and focused on the use of shape.
They went on to collaborate with the group theme of 'Orkney Landscape', taking inspiration from group discussion, as well as their own experiences, to develop a series of panels for a larger work.
Both the 2 meter final piece and the mini wall hangings were shown at the Soulisquoy Open Day in December.
